Splitting hairs

My non-shedding fluffball gets the occasional mat in the usual places - back end, tummy, armpits, ears. What's the best way to remove?

Combing them out is time-consuming and pulls on the hair, even if I hold the mat. Someone mentioned a mat splitter to me. I googled it and it looked like a torture device. How do you use it safely?

Any other ideas on mat removal, please?

  1. Even though grooming is time consuming, it is vital for the well-being of your dog's coat. Shedding or non-shedding breeds still need coat care! However different amounts are recommended for different breeds. There are some GREAT products out there for grooming, which keep on top of your dog's coat, such as the Furminator (http://www.furminator.com/). It is much easier to groom regularly and for good and proper amounts of time than have to go through removing mats.

  2. You could try this new detangle spray called 'Knot a Care in the World'. It is all natural and is designed to help you release knots and tangles from your dog’s coat. It contains natural conditioning ingredients and is infused with essential oils, so it smells wonderful too. The PH balanced formula means it can be used daily, if necessary. 3. There are a lot of detangler tools out there, I use a mat splitter and it is a lot kinder on the dog than trying to pull the knots out. Chat with a local groomer and get your dog booked in for a dematting session so you can start again with the coat. Be prepared that your dog might come back with a very short coat as many groomers take the welfare act seriously and will not unpick matts that are causing distress.
