The six dog rule

Can anyone help me? My neighbour recently complained to the council because I have 7 dogs living with me. She said that the dogs are too noisy, but they are actually really well behaved. I have now been told I need to apply for planning permission from the council to change the use of my house to 'commercial use' because there are more than 6 dogs here. The dogs are my pets, and I'm not running a business!

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'd never heard of it before and I want to know more!

  1. I would ask to see confirmation of the legislation that they are referring to. As far as I know this 'rule' was discussed but never passed, but I could be wrong. I know loads of people that do agility with more than 6 dogs. This is an old article but you may find it of use: http://www.ourdogs.co.uk/News/2003/August2003/News150803/sixdog.htm

  2. Speak to your housing officer. Some councils and housing associations have limits on the number of pets you own but can give permission for more than that if you apply. My local council only allows 2 pets but will allow more if applied for.

  3. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post. I will try to get the hang of it!
