In light of increased dog thefts and not being able to prove ownership by microchip, I have recently considered having my dogs tattooed as well. In the past I have been against tattooing because of dogs having their ears cut off to remove the tattoo but now I am of the mind that it visible and may deter someone stealing.
Is there only one tattoo registry? Is it painful for adult dogs? Is there anywhere else on the body they are routinely tattooed?
Anyone had it done – what are the pros and cons? Sorry there are so many questions, really don’t know much about it!

My dog had his ear tattooed, as well as having a micro–chip. He was a giant breed and tattooed at ten weeks, before he left the litter. There were no problems with it for the pup or my ownership of him, but I don't really see the point. It was difficult to read once he was an older adult, and no–one referred to it, only to his micro–chip.
ReplyDeleteYes, one of my dogs was tattooed as a puppy before he left the breeder and I don't see why I should have him microchipped, too, I don't want a foreign body put in him. The tattoo is still clear and he's almost 8. I have seen it done and it does hurt for a second, but I'm sure the large needle for the microchip does, too. There is a tattoo registry - National Dog Tattoo Register.

ReplyDeleteI have greyhounds and they were tattooed before I got them. They are registered on the greyhound database, so I am sure there must be more than one for other breeds. Mine have ear tattoos, but I've seen it commonly done on the inside back leg and on the belly. Some say the ink fades with time, I have to say my oldest is 13.5 years old and his ink is still clear as the day I adopted him.
