Is anyone able to recommend a supplier of waterproof coats for my 10kg mongrel who has a whippet-type build? Last winter I bought a well-made (not cheap!) padded coat with a waterproof outer. Unfortunately water seeped up the non-waterproof lining! I work as a dog-walker and therefore Misty spends at least half a day each day walking for 30 or 45 minutes at a time, and travelling between customers in the car. I love the look of Ruffwear's Cloud-Chaser Coat, but this doesn't appear to be available in a 'whippet-fit'. Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

It's really the fur rather than the build that you need to take into consideration and if your dog has a thicker coat than a whippet I would say that Ruffwear coat would be much too hot. It looks OK for snow and really icy conditions.

I've found doggiecoats to be an excellent company, they can offer a bespoke service at a reasonable price. Perhaps you could consider a "step in" style, there are no edges for the water to seep in!
ReplyDeletewww.robinsons-uk.com the horsey people also do waterproof dog coats.
ReplyDeleteI swear by my equafleece coats for the dogs. I'm a dog walker as well, so my dogs are also in and out of the van. I have a greyhound, and they do take into account the breed of dog in their fitting.
ReplyDeleteThe other good thing is that because they are jumpers rather than a coat, there's no strap to worry about adjusting every time they get in and out of the van, and they don't ride up, so keeping them warm in the van as well as dry on the walk.
Hi Mina, I've checked out the Equafleece website and their dog jumpers do look and sound really great! Don't you find that fleece snags on undergrowth though? Does fleece remain waterproof even if rained on all day? Many thanks, Claire
ReplyDeleteI've got a Saluki x lurcher with a very deep chest and found the best coat for him was by Gillrugs (www.gillrugs.com). They make them to measure and even offered to re-make it if it didn't fit as my dog is such an odd shape, even for a lurcher. The coat has been fantastic for years and has Flectalon material (like space blankets) to keep these thin dogs warm even if they're wet before you put the coat on.
