Nightcap

In the evenings, just before bed I like to give my dog a little biscuit treat. I have done so for the whole of her life and she is now 14 years old. The problem is this now makes her thirsty and she disturbs us at night.

Is there a treat I can give her that will not make her thirsty?

Thank you very much,

Sheila Thompson, by phone

  1. Why not try a moist, or meaty treat instead? There are various brands of dog jerky (besides the ones causing problems in America), or moist meaty treats; or you could even look into making your own liver (or other meat) cake for your dog, which you can adjust according to your dog's needs, likes, and dislikes - search online for "liver cake recipe", and you'll find all sorts of ideas

  2. Giving a dog a little bedtime snack is quite common. However, she may get up and have a drink regardless of the biscuit. Have you tried not giving a biscuit for a few nights and then monitoring her late night water drinking? This will tell you if the thirst is due to the biscuit or another reason

If this late night thirst is a new thing it may be worth getting a vet check. Considering her age, both waking in the early hours and excessive thirst can be an early sign of a health issue.

If you are sure it is because of the biscuit try researching biscuits that have a lower salt content. I am sure others can advise on a quality late night snack for dogs but ensure she is as healthy as she can be.
