I'd like to know what others have done when they go on holiday. I have three dogs and would like to find someone who can either have them or stay in my home. It's such a minefield of websites etc so how do I know who is reliable and affordable?
Any advice welcome.

I stay in home boarding (in Glasgow). We found it through Facebook - we liked a few pages and then looked at what they did and how they talked about the dogs. Then organised a "meet & greet" with one. Questions we asked:
ReplyDelete* how do you handle dogs with behaviour issues ?(I'm feisty & can get cranky sometimes)
* happy to handle medications? (I have colitis, and that also means smaller, more frequent meals)
* where do the dogs sleep? (in the bedroom, yay!!!)
* where do you walk? how often? (I *love* the walks we do!)
* do you have insurance? (I can't read but my friend checked it and it was good)
* see if they ask for a "care plan" (it's a good thing for them to ask for information - mine has written down my feeding regime, the commands that I know, my friend's contact details, and info about my medication)

Hi Roz, I am a pet sitter and dog walker and do doggie daycare. I would suggest looking on the NARPS website to find a suitable dog minder, making sure you see their insurance and collect references. If your dog is going to be boarded at someones house, check that they are licenced with the local authority. Hope that helps, Claire

ReplyDeleteIn the mean time I would advise just chatting to other dog owners when you're out and about with the dogs - it's amazing the contacts people have and you might just get a really good recommendation. You could also look on the notice boards at the local vets (try ones other than your own) but you may want to ask for a reference? Lizzy x

I've used Homesitters.co.UK several times and been very pleased.
ReplyDeleteI get a family member to stay over and look after my dog when I go on holiday. Everything has been fine - all I needed to do was run over the normal rules that are in place in the household when it comes to my dog and they were obliged.
