During dog training, for that extra umph I often recommend a tiny piece of cheese as a reward. But many of my customers complain that the cheese melts and is all greasy in their hands.
I'm in search of some cheese to recommend that is extra tasty for the dogs, not too greasy in the hand and doesn't melt.
Has anyone found the ultimate training cheese?
Thanks.

The following suggestions came via Facebook:
Charles Namey: We use mozzarella string cheese.
Karen Lawe: Austrian or Bavarian smoked cheese is generally well received and comes in handy sausage shape. Any cheese can go sticky so best to chop it into small cubes, spread out on a plate and leave in the fridge overnight uncovered to harden a bit if you don't want gooey cheese under your fingernails. It does soften as it gets warm again though.
Tina Humphrey: Organic - mild cheddar cut into tiny peas sized cubes - it sticks together well and can be 'hand dispensed' a tiny piece at a time. It's worked quite well for us!!!
Gillian S. Stewart Baby Bells..,cut into little bits, or the hard, strongest Cheddar the supermarket cares to stock lol!
Primula squeezy cheese is great. My 2 are particularly obedient for the ham and cheese flavour!
ReplyDeleteI now only buy organic cheese for welfare of dairy cattle reasons. After I've cut it I freeze it, to make it a bit less slimy to handle. Mature rather than mild, as I think that dogs can taste the difference, and it tends to have a less greasy texture.
ReplyDeleteHow about Lily's Kitchen organic cheese and apple treats? They are made with award winning cheddar cheese and they are the perfect size to use when training...http://www.lilyskitchen.co.uk/food-for-your-dog/2
ReplyDeleteLow-fat mozzarella string cheese!! Easy to carry, that way. Or the disgusting cheese in a can. Parmesan or other hard cheeses are easy to train with, not greasy or melty. I have also had good success chopping cheddar into cubes, putting it into a container, and then sprinkling Parmesan in and shaking it to avoid clumping. You can do the same with kibble, for a healthier cheese-like treat. Or microwave cheese sop up the extra oil, and chop into bits with a sharp knife.
ReplyDeleteThere are also Cheese Please dog treats. Look in my store...
I find the best training treats aren't cheese related at all. I buy ox heart from the butcher, bake it for an hour or so, chop it into small bits and bake it for another 30 minutes. Comes out crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, drives my dogs crazy and lasts for a couple of weeks inside an airtight container.
ReplyDeleteMy two will go for heart over cheese anyday.
