Mac for life

Hello Dogs Today team,

I’m after suggestions from other doggie people! Although its still the wettest the weather has ever been, I’ve found the air is quite warm and I’m getting hot on walks. I’m now on the hunt for a lightweight waterproof coat that can cope with dog walks across sodden ground, but doesn’t leave me sweating like mad.

Can any of your readers recommend their favourite macs?

Thank you very much.

  1. I have used Paramo for the last 12 years, trousers and jackets. They are lightweight, breathable, windproof and have pockets that keep stuff dry. The trousers are lined, so no need to wear leggings under them. I wear a base layer and a tee shirt under the jacket in even the coldest weather, and I have never been cold. The garments can be washed and re-proofed at home in the washing machine. They aren't cheap but the company has a site where they sell seconds, for a much reduced cost. I live in the Highlands of Scotland and walk my dogs in all weathers and Paramo are the only make I trust to keep me dry, inside and out.

  3. I love my Jack Wolfskin Waterproof, I've had it for years and is still going strong. It's not too heavy and has something called Texapore which makes it highly breathable, so you don't sweat in it like you would in a basic anorak. It's got loads of zips and pockets to keep things safe, and even air vents you can open! I often prefer to wear my Tilley Hat rather than a hood and so I can easily unzip and detach the hood when I want to. Although I'm female I always like to buy the men's jacket because they have longer sleeves but the womens jackets are just as good (my friend has one). And a purely frivolous bonus is the cute paw print logo on the jacket.

  4. My Barbour jacket is perfect for wet weather, worn without the lining, you should not over heat!! I've had Labradors for many years and have found that these coats are brilliant when out in all weather!! I prefer to wear it with a zipped in lining because
I tend to feel the cold regardless of the weather!
