Dear Dogs
Today,
I wondered
if anyone could help with the problem of staining on my white Shih Tzu and
Bichon. Both are rescue dogs who previously spent their lives in puppy farms,
forced to have endless litters. They lived in squalor and on a very poor diet.
They are
both about seven years old, and are now happy, healthy, and much loved. Bibi,
the Bichon, has very mild staining around her eyes and mouth, but Bindi, the
white Shih Tzu, suffers badly.
I’ve had her
tear ducts checked and they are not blocked. I also bathe their eyes every day
in warm water and try to keep the fur around affected areas as short as
possible.
I have tried
different food and avoid anything with colouring, preservatives etc. I’m
currently feeding Trophy Holistic dry food mixed with a small spoonful of tuna
or chicken, Tesco dental chews and white rawhide knots, plus a little fruit and
veg. they love pears, carrots and broccoli stalks to munch on.
Any advice
would be much appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Helen

Hi Helen,
ReplyDeletei have a little maltese, she is just 12 months old and she has always had a mild stain from corner of her eyes. I have always used eye stain lotions like diamond eye, every morning dribble some onto a cotton wool ball and soak it on, then when it drys it has never took the stain completely away but it has faded the darker stain.Well yesterday i went into jolley's pet store and bought another make, came home wiped it on and could'nt believe how better it looked when it had dryed. i'm made up with this one and am going to stick with this brand. It is called Crystal eye made by four paws, it is American but distributed here in England. So check your pet shops if they dont have it maybe pets at home or the bigger pet stores, or maybe check on amazon.co.uk, but i am happy with it.I am going to use it morning and night for a few weeks see how it goes, but after putting it on yesterday for the first time when it had dryed i could really see the difference, it had taken the dark stain and it had turned very pale. Hope this info helps. i have tried a couple of different ones but as i say this has been the best one for me.

I have never tried this myself but have been told feeding blueberies daily will help. Also be carefull with Brocolli as too much is toxic to dogs.
ReplyDeleteTear staining in white coloured dogs is certainly difficult to manage in certain cases. It sounds like you are doing all the right things though! One small thing that you may not have thought of is making sure that they eat and drink from stainless steel NOT plastic food bowls. Plastic food bowls often get microscopic cracks which can harbour bacteria which in turn can contribute to the tear staining problem. Also I would make sure you get their eyes checked regularly by your vet to ake sure they do not develop any bacterial infections. You can also increase the eye bathing to twice daily. Unfortunately they are not really any quick solutions to the problem but it sounds like you are very much on the right track!
