Healthy renal diet

Any advice on feeding a renal diet for my nearly 13-year-old dog (for early stages kidney failure – that shows in blood, but not behaviour)?
Fat content of prescription diet seems high (22%). For the price I could feed pre-prepared raw (presumably more balanced than I could prepare myself), or other good protein food, but how to lower phosphorous levels?
Happy to research but don't know where to start! It doesn't have to be raw, I am opening my mind to any helpful food.
Any clues please?

  1. Our fifteen year old Missy, was just diagnosed with raised enzyme levels after bloods. The vet recommended Royal Canin. We have the wet food, which Missy prefers - and that's under 10% fat. She's doing well on it, very bouncy still.

Hi Rachel, having kept Shar Pei for a number of years and knowing other Shar Pei owners, Shar Pei are affect by kidney failure, unfortunately it is prevalent in the breed. I have attached a link for you to look at, hopefully will give you some useful info. Not all will be relevant as more geared towards Shar Pei, but the diet bit will be.

    Good luck.

Have a look at Lew Olson's newsletter here: http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/kidney-diet/
which also mentions a couple of other good sites.

  4. Thank you everyone - lots to look into. We have always used Burns and got on very well with it and they have recommended half dog food, half mixer to keep phosphorus levels down. The vet has recommended Virbec renal diet but is happy for us to go with the Burns options while the dog is well and no lost appetite (I find it hard to imagine that she will EVER lose her appetite and will definitely take this as a strong quality of life indicatory...)

Off to look at links now - and thanks again
