Up all night

Hi,

I have a three-year-old Westie. She’s a great little bitch, but has a problem. She produces a lot of bile at night which she finds hard to shift and it keeps her awake. Before my Westie I had a Lab who lived to 16 and she never had anything like this so I’m lost.

Hope you can help.

Thanks,

  1. As has been mentioned on another "think tank" question, there could be a myriad of reasons your dog is having a problem with so much bile, it is something only your vet can help you with.

  2. A friend of mine has always had Westies, and I know that two of them had the same sort of problem. Possibly a trait in the breed, although I had a Golden Retriever who periodically would also vomit up bile in the morning. I ended up by giving him a 'snack' before he settled down for the night, so that his stomach had something in it, which did seem to help. He was never ill, and would always eat up his breakfast with no problem.

It may be worth looking into what food your dog is eating, in case it's a reaction to some ingredient in it, or possibly feeding the evening meal later, so that there is food in the stomach when the dog settles for the night. Also trying homeopathy may be useful, I have used different remedies for tummy problems for many years with great success.

Do get the dog checked out by a vet first though, to rule out more serious problems.

  3. whilst a visit to the Vet is a very good idea, my old Lab x would bring up bile if I did not feed her little and often. I would make up her whole days food in the morning, (to stop me overfeeding her!) and give it is to her a wee bit at a time.
    Hope this helps.

  4. We once had a Poodle prone to this but a few biscuits last thing worked a treat.
